Dr. Cooper Champions Holistic Health at International Yoga Day

Liberia today joined the global community in commemorating the International Day of Yoga, with the country’s Deputy Minister/Chief Medical Officer- R.L. Dr. Catherine T. Cooper, championing yoga as an important tool in advancing holistic health.

elivering her remarks at a special observance held in Monrovia, Dr. Cooper acknowledged the significance of incorporating personal wellness practices into national health efforts to improve the physical, mental, and social well-being of all Liberians. Citing the World Health Organization’s definition of health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity,” Dr. Cooper said yoga offers a well-rounded approach that aligns with national health goals. “Yoga is more than physical activity. It nurtures mental clarity, emotional resilience, and community harmony,” she stated. “As we continue to strengthen our health systems, we must also promote personal practices like yoga that empower people to take charge of their wellness.”

This year’s observance carries the theme “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” stressing the interconnectedness of individual wellness and environmental sustainability. Dr. Cooper hailed the 2025 theme as “a timely reminder that our physical and mental well-being is deeply linked to the health of our planet.” She encouraged citizens to adopt yoga as a regular part of their lives, particularly in managing non-communicable diseases, reducing stress, and supporting mental health.
