The Liberian People's Party (LPP) of Cllr. Tiawon Saye Gongloe has welcomed the appointment of Jonathan Weedor as Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC), describing him as a credible and capable figure at a critical moment for the country's electoral system. In a press release issued on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, the party congratulated Weedor following his appointment by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai on March 30, 2026. His nomination comes in the wake of the resignation of former NEC Chairperson Davidetta Brown-Lassanah, amid increasing public scrutiny of the Commission's performance.

The LPP said the appointment arrives at a time when the NEC faces mounting pressure to improve transparency, modernize its systems, and ensure timely announcement of election results. LPP's endorsement of Weedor follows endorsements from the MRD and NPP. The two parties separately endorsed Weedor's appointment. "The LPP views Mr. Weedor as an apolitical figure with the competence required to address the challenges confronting Liberia's electoral process," the statement noted. "His leadership presents an opportunity to rebuild public trust and strengthen the credibility of the Commission." While endorsing his appointment, the party stressed that expectations remain high. It urged Weedor to prioritize reforms that would enhance the integrity of the voter register, expand the use of technology, and improve the efficiency of electoral operations.

The LPP warned that the new NEC chair must remain mindful, urging him to remember that his ultimate responsibility lies with the Liberian people, whose confidence in the electoral process has been tested in recent years. "His role is not merely administrative," the party stated. "It is an opportunity to restore trust and leave a lasting impact on Liberia's democratic institutions." The party further noted that Weedor’s tenure would be judged not only by his qualifications but by his willingness to take decisive and impartial action, particularly in the face of political pressure. Highlighting the long-term implications of his leadership, the LPP cautioned that decisions made under his watch would shape Liberia’s electoral landscape beyond a single election cycle.

The party also pledged its readiness to work with the NEC within the bounds of the law to promote credible, transparent, and inclusive elections. “We believe this is a defining moment for Liberia’s democracy,” the statement added. “The success of the NEC under Mr. Weedor will depend on its ability to operate independently and deliver results that reflect the will of the people.” The LPP further urged the new chairperson to uphold the highest standards of accountability and integrity, emphasizing that effective public service remains central to national progress. “Government is a place to serve, not to steal,” the statement read. “A better Liberia is possible.”
