Information Minister  Jerolinmek Matthew Piah

The Government of Liberia(GoL) has clarified its position regarding a statement delivered at the United Nations by Liberia’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Louise Brown, on the reported action involving the United States and the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. Speaking at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) regular press briefing in Monrovia, the Minister of Information,  Jerolinmek Matthew Piah, emphasized that the statement made at the UN was not an independent or unilateral position of Liberia.

Rather, it reflected the collective position of the A3 the three African countries currently serving as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. Minister Piah explained that Liberia, alongside its A3 partners, consistently speaks with one voice on matters of international peace and security in keeping with the African Union’s (AU) shared values and diplomatic principles. He stressed that Ambassador Brown’s remarks were delivered within this established framework of collective African representation at the Security Council. According to the Information Minister, the A3 position aligns squarely with the African Union’s approach of closely monitoring developments between the United States and Venezuela, while encouraging restraint, dialogue, and respect for international law.

He noted that the African Union has long maintained that disputes between states should be resolved peacefully through diplomatic engagement and multilateral processes. “The statement delivered at the United Nations was made on behalf of the A3 and reflects Africa’s collective commitment to de-escalation, dialogue, and adherence to the principles of sovereignty and non-interference,” Minister Piah said. “Liberia remains firmly committed to these principles as a responsible member of the international community.” Minister Piah further underscored that Liberia’s foreign policy, under the leadership of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., is guided by multilateralism, constructive engagement, and respect for the rules-based international order.

As Liberia prepares to assume its historic seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term, the country remains focused on promoting peace, stability, and African solidarity on the global stage. He cautioned against misinterpretations of statements made in multilateral forums, particularly when such statements are delivered on behalf of regional or group positions. “Liberia values its longstanding diplomatic relations with all nations, including the United States, and remains committed to maintaining balanced and principled foreign relations,” the Minister added.

The GoL reassured the public and international partners that it will continue to engage transparently on foreign policy matters and to uphold Africa’s shared positions in global decision-making bodies. Minister Piah concluded by reaffirming Liberia’s dedication to peaceful conflict resolution and its readiness to work with international partners to support stability and cooperation in the Americas and beyond.
