Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, Sr. has continued efforts to strengthen Liberian participation in the country’s commerce sector, holding a strategic meeting with Liberian-owned distribution businesses aimed at improving nationwide supply chains and boosting local market control. The meeting, held on Monday, May 4, 2026, brought together key Liberian distributors to discuss ways of enhancing the supply of goods across the country while increasing the role of Liberian businesses within the distribution and retail sectors. During the discussions, the distributors assured the Vice President of their readiness and financial capacity to effectively distribute products nationwide.
They emphasized their commitment to ensuring that goods reach retailers and consumers in a timely and efficient manner, while also supporting Liberian-owned retail businesses through stronger partnerships and dependable supply networks. Participants, however, warned of challenges that could hinder genuine local participation in the sector. Among the major concerns raised was the reported practice of some foreign-owned distribution companies allegedly using Liberian businesses as fronts to bypass regulatory measures intended to protect and empower local enterprises.
The distributors cautioned that such practices could undermine fair competition and weaken efforts to build a truly Liberian-driven market system. As part of ongoing efforts to address these concerns and improve coordination within the commercial sector, the meeting agreed that the next phase of engagement will include producers and manufacturers. The broader consultation is expected to focus on developing a coordinated strategy to ensure stable market supply, strengthen collaboration among stakeholders, and promote sustainable economic growth.
The engagement forms part of the Government’s broader push to expand Liberian participation in key sectors of the economy. Speaking recently on the state-owned Liberia Broadcasting System (ELBC), Vice President Koung reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to ensuring that Liberians fully benefit from economic opportunities reserved for them under existing laws.
