Rep. Mulbah Defects to Ruling Unity Party

Montserrado County Representative Sumo Mulbah has switched parties, abandoning the All-Liberia Party (ALP) to join the ruling Unity Party (UP). Mulbah, in a public statement, said his defection was driven by a commitment to national development, prioritizing the "interest of one country and people." The move is expected to alter the political landscape in Liberia. Mulbah emphasized his focus on governance, accountability, and serving the needs of Liberian citizens, stating, “Liberia’s interests must come first.”

He stressed that Liberia deserves leadership that tackles corruption and embraces justice, while promoting policies that uplift all citizens rather than a privileged few. Mulbah also commended recent government actions, including reductions in fuel prices, dry-season stability efforts, and ongoing infrastructure work in Monrovia. The lawmaker disclosed that he will formally resign from the ALP on Monday to fully participate in what he described as the “good governance process” under President Joseph Boakai. “Considering the many government initiatives and support aimed at fulfilling promises to the public, I plan to submit my party membership resignation letter on Monday evening,” he stated. Mulbah clarified that his departure is not the result of conflict within the ALP, adding that his relationship with the party remains cordial.

“To my Party ALP: You did nothing wrong, and I enjoyed my time with all of you; however, Liberia’s interests must come first,” he said. “Governance isn’t about jealousy or envy; it’s about cooperation, communication, and understanding.” He further cited Article 17 of the Liberian Constitution, which guarantees the right to freely associate with any political group. Rep. Mulbah warned that while he is joining the Unity Party, he does not intend to be a quiet member. “To the Party I am joining UP: I am not here to remain silent on issues impacting the people of District #3,” he emphasized. “My planned involvement reflects the effort and progress already achieved… Please keep those good hands working.”

He said he and his supporters plan to officially join the Unity Party on December 6, 2025, aligning with the party’s scheduled membership consolidation activities. ‘I Was Elected to Land the Aircraft Safely’ In his statement, Mulbah assured residents of District #3 that his decision aligns with the majority’s expectations. “I was elected to pilot the aircraft of District #3 and land it safely at an airport where everyone will survive,” he said, noting that about 65% of residents supported his political shift. He stated that his focus remains on improving living conditions and supporting national recovery, rather than being swayed by “propaganda, large budgets, grand speeches, or ambitious proposals.” Rep. Mulbah’s statement  signal a renewed appeal for unity among Liberia’s political actors.

“Let my coming demonstrate to all opposition that we share a common goal: the Liberian people,” he said. “Achieving a better Liberia means uniting minds rather than dividing them.” He urged political leaders to support one another in the interest of national progress. “If a leader is not doing well, give him a chance to improve and support him with ideas rather than tearing him down. Bringing him down is like bringing yourself down. Conversely, if a leader is doing well, support him to make the country better.” Rep. Mulbah ended his statement with a message of national cohesion: “One country, one people, one mind.”
