Sen. McGill Calls for Swift Ratification of HPX Concession Agreement

Senator Nathaniel F. McGill of Margibi County has strongly urged the Liberian Senate to promptly ratify the High Power Exploration (HPX) concession agreement, emphasizing that there is absolutely no justification for delaying or obstructing its approval. Speaking on the matter, Senator McGill stressed that the HPX concession agreement was duly negotiated and presented to the National Legislature in keeping with Liberia’s laws and constitutional requirements.

He noted that the agreement has undergone the necessary technical and legal reviews and should now be considered on its merits, with the national interest placed above all other considerations. “There is absolutely no reason why the HPX concession should not be ratified,” Senator McGill stated. “I sincerely hope that my Senate colleagues will not stand in the way of its ratification, as doing so would deny the Liberian people the significant economic and development benefits that this concession promises.”

According to Senator McGill, the HPX concession represents a major opportunity to boost Liberia’s economy through increased foreign direct investment, job creation, and expanded infrastructure development. He explained that the agreement has the potential to enhance value addition in the extractive sector while generating sustainable revenues that can be invested in education, healthcare, roads, and other critical public services. The Margibi County lawmaker further emphasized that Liberia’s credibility as an investment destination depends largely on the country’s ability to honor negotiated agreements and provide a predictable business environment.

He warned that unnecessary delays or political interference in the ratification process could send negative signals to current and prospective investors, thereby undermining national development efforts. Senator McGill also called on his colleagues to rise above partisan interests and focus on the broader economic implications of the concession. He noted that concession agreements, when properly structured and monitored, serve as vital tools for economic transformation, especially for a developing country like Liberia that seeks to expand its productive base and reduce unemployment. “The HPX concession agreement was submitted to the National Legislature for ratification in good faith,” he added.

“Our responsibility as lawmakers is to review it objectively, ensure it aligns with the best interests of our people, and take decisive action. Prolonged indecision only harms the country.” In closing, Senator McGill reaffirmed his commitment to policies and legislative actions that promote economic growth, transparency, and national progress. He expressed confidence that the Senate will act responsibly and in the best interest of Liberia by ratifying the HPX concession agreement without further delay.
