The Ministry of Agriculture, with support from the World Bank–funded Rural Economic Transformation Project (RETRAP), has launched a five-day intensive training program on Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) at the Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI) in Suakoko, Bong County. The training runs from October 27 to 31, 2025. The initiative brings together 60 farmers from six counties Bomi, Bong, Grand Cape Mount, Montserrado, Margibi, and Nimba representing Liberia’s major rice, cassava, and rubber production regions.
The training aims to strengthen farmers’ capacity to adopt sustainable and climate-resilient farming techniques that will enhance productivity, improve livelihoods, and safeguard the environment. Participants will be introduced to modern climate-smart agricultural practices, including improved seed selection, efficient water management, soil conservation techniques, and integrated pest management. These practices are designed to help farmers adapt to the growing challenges posed by climate change while ensuring food security and increased market competitiveness.
In addition to technical farming skills, farmers are receiving entrepreneurship training under the globally recognized Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB) model. This component will equip them with essential business knowledge from planning and record-keeping to marketing and customer service enabling them to view farming not just as subsistence, but as a profitable enterprise. “By adopting climate-smart and entrepreneurial approaches, farmers will be better equipped to face modern agricultural challenges,” emphasized Mr. Nathan Zoney, RETRAP County-Level Facilitator for Montserrado County. “This program is about empowering farmers to be innovative, resilient, and business-minded in their production.”
The Ministry of Agriculture continues to prioritize programs that align with the government’s agricultural transformation agenda, focusing on sustainability, rural empowerment, and private sector participation. The ongoing Climate-Smart Agriculture training reflects the Ministry’s commitment to building a resilient agricultural sector that supports Liberia’s broader goals of economic growth and food security.
