Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Her Excellency Mme. Sara Beysolow Nyanti, has reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to global cooperation, peace, and the rule of law as Liberia prepares to assume its seat as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2026–2027 term. Speaking at a special press briefing held at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) on Friday, October 24, 2025, Minister Nyanti was joined by Minister of Justice, Cllr. Oswald Tweh and Minister of Information, Hon. Jerolimek Piah.

The trio addressed a range of issues related to Liberia’s international standing, national preparedness, and recent discussions surrounding the arrival of Mr. Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national being repatriated from the United States. Minister Nyanti underscored that Liberia’s readiness to welcome citizens of the world wherever they may come from is not only a sovereign responsibility, but also a reflection of the nation’s commitment to international human rights norms and due process.

“As Liberia prepares to sit at the table of the United Nations Security Council, we are reaffirming to the world that we are a responsible nation ready to contribute meaningfully to global peace and security, and ready to uphold our obligations under international law,” Minister Nyanti stated. “As we take our seat at the UN Security Council, we want the world to see Liberia as a country that honors its obligations, protects citizens of the world, and cooperates with its partners in good faith,” she added. “We are prepared to host citizens of the world, including Mr. Garcia, in full alignment with diplomatic protocols and the rule of law.

This process is guided by official communication between the Government of Liberia and the Government of the United States through established diplomatic channels,” she emphasized. The Foreign Minister further clarified that there was no diplomatic pressure exerted on Liberia regarding Mr. Garcia’s case. Instead, the decision was made after careful consideration, consistent with Liberia’s legal and humanitarian obligations. Minister Nyanti used the opportunity to highlight that Liberia’s election to the UN Security Council, beginning January 2026, places the nation at the heart of global decision-making on peace, security, and international cooperation a role that demands both internal readiness and responsible international engagement.

Liberia’s election to the UN Security Council marks the first time in decades that the country will serve on the body responsible for maintaining international peace and security. Minister Nyanti emphasized that this opportunity symbolizes the international community’s trust in Liberia’s progress and leadership since the end of its civil conflict. “Our journey from post-war recovery to a position on the world’s highest peace and security platform is a testament to the resilience of the Liberian people and the leadership of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai,” she noted. “We will use this platform to advocate for global peace, climate security, youth empowerment, and inclusive governance issues that resonate deeply with Liberia’s own national priorities.”

As the briefing concluded, Minister Nyanti called for unity, national pride, and responsible discourse among Liberians both at home and abroad. She reminded the public that Liberia’s standing on the international stage depends on the collective efforts of its citizens, government institutions, and partners. “Liberia’s re-emergence as a respected voice in global affairs is not the achievement of one person or one institution it is the achievement of a people who believe in democracy, peace, and progress,” she said. Speaking during the press briefing, Minister of Justice, Cllr. Oswald Tweh, affirmed that the repatriation of any citizen from abroad, regardless of circumstance, must be handled within the framework of Liberia’s judicial system and constitutional safeguards.

“Every citizen has an inalienable right to come to Liberia. Our role as the Ministry of Justice is to ensure that such visit occur within the boundaries of law, respecting the dignity and rights of all individuals involved,” Cllr. Tweh explained. “The Government will take every necessary measure to ensure that the process involving Mr. Garcia or any similar case is conducted with transparency, fairness, and respect for human rights,” he added. Cllr. Tweh further assured the public that the Ministry of Justice, in collaboration with other relevant agencies, is fully prepared to handle any legal or administrative matters that may arise from the repatriation process. Minister of Information, Hon. Jerolimek Piah, reiterated that the Government remains committed to transparent communication with the public and the international community.

He emphasized that Liberia’s growing global profile demands a proactive media strategy that highlights the nation’s values of peace, hospitality, and justice. “Liberia stands ready to engage with the global community not only as a member of the United Nations but as a responsible voice in international affairs. Our narrative must reflect who we truly are a peaceful, law-abiding, and welcoming nation,” Minister Piah said.
