Hon. Kortor Sehwongbay Kwagrue has officially taken the oath of office as the new Representative of Nimba County District #5, marking a significant political transition in the county’s leadership. The oath was administered on Tuesday by House Speaker Hon. Richard Nagbe Koon during a brief but symbolic ceremony held in the Chambers of the House of Representatives. Kwagrue’s induction follows the election of his predecessor, Hon. Samuel G. Kogar, to the Liberian Senate earlier this year. Kogar secured his seat in a by-election held on April 22, 2025, following the passing of long-serving Nimba County Senator, the late Prince Yormie Johnson.
Kogar’s move to the Upper House subsequently created a vacancy in District #5, paving the way for the by-election that brought Kwagrue to power. Representing the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR), Hon. Kwagrue emerged victorious with 4,795 votes, representing 31.39% of the total ballots cast. He triumphed over independent candidate Borris B. Barleah and Augustus Karnay Menkoah of the VOLT Party. His win is widely viewed as a consolidation of the MDR’s political influence in Nimba County, a region that remains a critical stronghold for the party. In his inaugural address, Hon. Kwagrue expressed profound gratitude to the people of District #5 for the confidence reposed in him.
He pledged to work tirelessly to improve the lives of his constituents, emphasizing a governance approach rooted in accountability, transparency, and community development. “My election is not just a personal victory, but a collective step toward a better District #5,” Hon. Kwagrue stated. “Together, we will prioritize roads, schools, healthcare, and youth empowerment to ensure every citizen feels the impact of government in their daily lives.”
He also called for unity among lawmakers and political actors from Nimba, noting that collaboration is essential for the county’s sustained growth. “Our progress as a district and county depends on our ability to work together beyond political lines,” he added. The ceremony was attended by several members of the House of Representatives, staff, and supporters from Nimba County who gathered to witness the historic moment. Hon. Kwagrue’s swearing-in marks the official beginning of his legislative journey, as he joins colleagues in shaping laws and policies that drive national development.
