Junior Female Lone Star Make Early Statement With 2-0 Win Over Hosts in WAFU A U-20 Opener

Liberia’s U-20 women’s team announced themselves as contenders on Tuesday, defeating host nation Guinea-Bissau 2-0 to open their WAFU A U-20 Women’s Championship campaign in Bissau. The Junior Female Lone Star wasted little time asserting control. In the 9th minute, forward Makasia Saryon latched onto a through ball and finished with composure, silencing the home supporters and giving Liberia a 1-0 lead.

Guinea-Bissau tried to respond, pushing numbers forward as the half wore on. But Liberia’s structure held, and just before the interval, winger Olive Nyumah capitalized on a defensive lapse to slot home the second. The goal gave Liberia a 2-0 cushion heading into the break and proved decisive. The second half tested Liberia’s resolve. The hosts, urged on by their fans, created their best chance in the 63rd minute when striker Fatumata Djalo broke free inside the box. Goalkeeper Makula K. Konneh, who features for Ravia Angels domestically, produced a full-stretch save to her right, tipping the shot around the post.

The stop preserved the clean sheet and earned Konneh Woman of the Match honors. From there, Liberia’s backline marshaled by captain Louise Brown closed ranks. Center-backs Senrena Zarwolo and Grace Kamara repelled a series of late crosses, while fullbacks Bendu Yantay  and Princess Hill pushed forward selectively to keep Guinea-Bissau pinned back. The final whistle confirmed a professional performance and three points for the visitors. The result carries weight for a Liberian side looking to improve on past performances. Liberia finished third in the previous edition of the tournament. Speaking after the match, head coach Famata Dean said the team had arrived with a different mentality.

“We came here to make a stronger statement,” Dean told reporters. “The girls executed the plan, stayed disciplined, and showed what Liberian football can be.” The WAFU A U-20 Women’s Championship, organized by the West African Football Union Zone A, serves as a key development platform for emerging talent across the region. For many players, it is the first taste of international competition. The tournament also acts as a qualifier for continental youth championships.

Liberia’s path does not get easier. The Junior Female Lone Star sit in a competitive Group A alongside Senegal, Mali, and The Gambia. Liberia will face Senegal on Friday in a match that could shape the group. Mali and The Gambia follow next week. Only the top two teams in each group advance to the knockout rounds.

Tuesday’s win was built on a blend of youth and experience. Six players in Dean’s starting XI were part of the squad that secured third place last year, including Konneh and Nyumah. Newcomers like Saryon and 16-year-old winger Gloria Karyah added pace and directness that troubled Guinea-Bissau throughout. The Liberia Football Association has invested heavily in women’s football over the past three years, launching a U-17 league and expanding the national women’s top flight to 10 teams.

Tuesday’s result will be seen as validation of that work. For Guinea-Bissau, the loss is a setback but not terminal. As hosts, they will look to rebound in their next fixture against The Gambia. As for Liberia, the focus shifts quickly. Three points are in the bag, confidence is high, and the target is clear. “We respect every team here,” Dean added, “but we didn’t come just to participate.”
