The landscape of youth football in Grand Bassa County shifted on Thursday as the Liberia Football Association (LFA), through its Inter-School Sports Association (ISSA) division, officially launched the inaugural Under-15 School Special Tournament.
The historic competition brings together 16 schools across various academic divisions, providing a long-awaited organized platform for the county’s youngest athletes. For many participants, this represents the first time in years they have been able to compete within a structured, official league.
The tournament's mission extends beyond technical skills on the pitch. Organizers have infused the competition with a strong educational mandate, encouraging student-athletes to balance their passion for the "beautiful game" with academic excellence. Notably, the LFA is utilizing the tournament as a strategic tool to attract out-of-school children back into the classroom.
The tournament began with high-stakes action and several nail-biting finishes with Buchanan Primary School secured a narrow 1-0 victory over World Wide Mission to advance. Buchanan Open Bible showed nerves of steel, defeating Lucturine School 4-3 on penalties after a scoreless draw in regulation.
CMFI emerged victorious in the day’s most explosive match, edging out Bassa High School 3-2. City International School picked up an easy three points after New Testament Baptist School forfeited their fixture. Mercy Bates and Salvation Army School treated fans to a 2-2 thriller, with Mercy Bates eventually clinching a 5-4 penalty shootout win.
The Participating field includes local giants and rising contenders such as:
Bassa High School
Divine Grace
Prophet Jeremiah School
Buchanan Elementary
The quest for glory resumes on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. With this launch, Grand Bassa continues to cement its reputation as a powerhouse of raw football talent, signaling a bright future for the sport in the county.
