Sierra Leonean football is celebrating a major achievement as rising star Momoh Kamara has been officially nominated for the prestigious CAF Young Player of the Year (Men) award. The 20-year-old midfielder, currently playing for Minnesota United II in the MLS Next Pro, is being recognized for a phenomenal year that saw him transition from an African youth standout to a promising senior international.
Kamara’s incredible run began at the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, where he served as captain for Sierra Leone. He led the nation to a historic quarter-final appearance and finished as the tournament’s undisputed star, claiming both the Best Player and Top Scorer honours with four goals. His highlight moment was a sensational hat-trick against the hosts, Egypt. His spectacular performance on the continental stage quickly opened doors.
This year, Kamara made his senior national team debut and contributed to the Leone Stars' success, notably providing an assist in a crucial 3-1 victory over Guinea-Bissau during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Maintaining his momentum at the club level, Kamara has netted three goals in ten appearances for Minnesota United II.
The CAF nomination now firmly places Kamara among Africa's elite young talents, competing for the top continental crown. The entire nation of Sierra Leone will be watching closely to see if their prodigious talent can take home the coveted award later this year
