The Food Authority of Liberia (FAL), in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), on Tuesday commenced a one-day strategic plan review aimed at strengthening national food safety systems for the period 2026 to 2028. The stakeholder engagement, held at the Corina Hotel in Monrovia, brought together key representatives from government institutions, private sector actors, development partners, and civil society organizations.
The session served as a platform for participants to contribute to a comprehensive review process that will inform the next phase of Liberia’s national food safety roadmap. Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Director General of FAL, Madam Precellia Cherue, underscored the importance of the review exercise in shaping a modern, efficient, and responsive national food safety framework. She noted that the new strategic plan is being designed to align with Liberia’s national food safety priorities, strengthen regulatory capacity, and support the Authority’s enforcement objectives across the country. Madam Cherue emphasized that the strategic plan will provide technical guidance essential for formulating an actionable blueprint that advances food safety practices and enhances the overall integrity of the nation’s food supply chain.
“The updated strategic plan will guide the Authority’s operations over the next three years as we work to protect public health and build consumer confidence in Liberia’s food system,” she stated. Also speaking at the event, Mr. Isaac Donkor, Technical Lead of the Liberia Food Safety Initiative/UNIDO, applauded FAL for its leadership and commitment to advancing food safety reforms. He highlighted the importance of the ongoing review in improving regulatory efficiency, strengthening multisectoral coordination, and ensuring safer food for all Liberians.
Mr. Donkor further noted that the revised plan will not only reflect national food safety priorities but also position FAL to meet international standards, enhance consumer protection, and support regional trade facilitation. The Food Authority of Liberia and UNIDO reaffirmed their commitment to fostering a safer, healthier, and more resilient national food ecosystem.
