Liberia and China have reaffirmed their growing strategic partnership following high-level talks between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Liberia’s Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti in Beijing on May 19, 2026. During the meeting, Wang Yi described China and Liberia as “friends and partners sharing weal and woe,” highlighting the two nations’ longstanding cooperation during global health crises such as Ebola and COVID-19. He noted that bilateral relations have reached “a new height of strategic partnership” under the leadership of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.

China praised Liberia for its continued commitment to the one-China principle and pledged ongoing support for Liberia’s sovereignty, security, and development agenda. Wang Yi further disclosed that China is prepared to expand cooperation with Liberia in key sectors including trade, agriculture, infrastructure, youth development, culture, sports, and human resource development. A major highlight of the discussions was China’s newly implemented zero-tariff policy for African countries with diplomatic ties to Beijing. According to Wang Yi, Liberia is among the first African nations expected to benefit from the initiative, which aims to boost trade and economic cooperation between China and Africa.

The Chinese Foreign Minister also commended Liberia for supporting China’s global initiatives, including the vision of building a “community with a shared future for humanity,” while welcoming Liberia’s move to join the International Organization for Mediation. Speaking during the talks, Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti described Liberia and China as “strategic partners with shared ideals,” reaffirming Liberia’s commitment to the one-China policy and appreciation for China’s longstanding assistance to Liberia’s national development and public health response efforts.

Nyanti said Liberia is eager to strengthen cooperation with China in areas such as trade, agriculture, infrastructure, healthcare, and cultural exchange, while also learning from China’s poverty alleviation and development model.
She further emphasized Liberia’s readiness to deepen multilateral cooperation with China within the United Nations framework to promote international fairness, justice, lasting peace, and shared prosperity.
The two sides also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual concern.
