The Liberia National Police(LNP) has launched an investigation into a railway accident in the White Plains community that left one person dead and two seriously injured. According to a statement issued by the police, the accident occurred late Tuesday evening, March 3 when a train travelling from Monrovia collided with a vehicle attempting to cross the railway track in White Plains. Preliminary information indicates that the vehicle was attempting to pass across the track when it was struck by the oncoming train. Authorities confirmed that the two injured persons sustained serious bodily injuries and were immediately transported to the John F. Kennedy Medical Center for emergency medical treatment.

Police officers assigned to the White Plains area have since begun a full investigation aimed at determining the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the collision. The incident has again highlighted longstanding safety concerns surrounding railway crossings in Liberia, particularly in densely populated communities where rail lines intersect with major roads and residential areas. Railway lines in parts of Monrovia and surrounding communities are frequently used by concession-operated trains transporting minerals and other goods to the coast. However, many crossings lack modern safety infrastructure such as warning signals, barriers, or designated crossing points. Residents in several communities along the railway corridor have previously raised alarms about the dangers posed by unregulated crossings and the absence of protective systems that could prevent such accidents.

The latest accident is likely to intensify calls for companies operating Liberia’s rail infrastructure to strengthen safety measures as part of their broader social development responsibilities. Industry observers and community advocates say concessionaires benefiting from Liberia’s railway networks should invest more in infrastructure improvements, including clearly marked crossings, warning lights, protective gates and community awareness programs.

They argue that improved safety systems are essential to protect residents living near rail corridors and motorists who frequently cross the tracks. Meanwhile, the LNP is urging motorists to exercise extreme caution when approaching railway crossings. Authorities emphasized that drivers must ensure the track is completely clear before attempting to cross and should remain vigilant at all times when travelling through areas where trains operate. Police say further details will be released as the investigation continues.
