The Liberia National Police(LNP) has launched an investigation into a railway accident in the White Plains community that left one person dead and two seriously injured. According to a statement issued by the police, the accident occurred late Tuesday evening, March 3 when a train travelling from Monrovia collided with a vehicle attempting to cross the railway track in White Plains. Preliminary information indicates that the vehicle was attempting to pass across the track when it was struck by the oncoming train. Authorities confirmed that the two injured persons sustained serious bodily injuries and were immediately transported to the John F. Kennedy Medical Center for emergency medical treatment.
Police officers assigned to the White Plains area have since begun a full investigation aimed at determining the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the collision. The incident has again highlighted longstanding safety concerns surrounding railway crossings in Liberia, particularly in densely populated communities where rail lines intersect with major roads and residential areas. Railway lines in parts of Monrovia and surrounding communities are frequently used by concession-operated trains transporting minerals and other goods to the coast.
