The Government of Liberia on Monday December 15, 2025 received a major consignment of rice from the People’s Republic of China, reaffirming the strong bilateral relations and operational partnership between the two countries. 


The donation, totaling 3,600 metric tons of rice equivalent to 72,000 bags was officially received at the Freeport of Monrovia by the Deputy Minister for Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cllr. Jeddi M. Armah and subsequently handed over to the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Hon. Magdalene Ellen Dagoseh. Speaking during the reception ceremony, Deputy Minister Armah described the donation as a timely and critical intervention aimed at stabilizing the local rice market and strengthening national food security efforts. 


He emphasized that rice remains Liberia’s most important staple commodity, and such support plays a vital role in cushioning vulnerable populations against market fluctuations and supply constraints. “The donation of this rice is a clear demonstration of the enduring friendship and practical cooperation between Liberia and the People’s Republic of China,” Deputy Minister Armah stated. “This support will contribute significantly to our government’s efforts to ensure market stability, affordability, and access to rice for Liberian households across the country.”


According to the Deputy Minister Armah, the rice donation is a direct result of the strong operational partnership and mutual understanding that exist between the two governments. He expressed the Government of Liberia’s sincere appreciation to the Chinese Government for its continued support to Liberia’s development agenda, particularly in the areas of food security, trade, and economic cooperation.Making the official presentation, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Liberia, His Excellency Yin Chengwu, reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Liberia’s socio-economic development.


Ambassador Yin noted that the donation reflects China’s longstanding policy of promoting South-South cooperation and solidarity with developing countries, especially during periods of economic and humanitarian need. He further explained that the donation resulted from engagements at the 2024 Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit in Beijing, China, which was attended by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr.Ambassador Yin emphasized that China values its longstanding relationship with Liberia and will continue to work closely with the Liberian Government to support initiatives that improve livelihoods and promote sustainable development.


The presentation ceremony was attended by several senio government officials, including representatives from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of State without Portfolio, and other relevant institutions. 
Their presence underscored the Government’s collective commitment to ensuring the effective receipt, management, and utilization of the donated rice.


The Government of Liberia has assured the public that appropriate measures will be put in place to ensure the rice is properly managed and distributed in line with national priorities, with the ultimate goal of easing market pressures and enhancing food availability nationwide.
