Liberia has once again secured a place on the continental stage, as one of its distinguished public health experts rises to a key leadership position at Africa’s premier health agency. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has appointed Dr. Tolbert G. Nyenswah as Director for Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response (PPPR), following a highly competitive selection process.
Dr. Nyenswah joins a team of top-tier public health professionals across the continent, including Dr. Tala Jallow, Dr. Folake Olayinka, Professor Yap Boum II, Professor Aliko Ahmed, Dr. Thaddée Ndikumana, and Dr. Peter Kumpalume, among others. According to an official statement from Africa CDC, Dr. Nyenswah brings extensive experience to the role, having led Liberia’s response to the Ebola Virus Disease and later serving as the founding Director General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia.
His appointment underscores Liberia’s growing influence in global health leadership, with his expertise in emergency response, disease surveillance, and strengthening resilient health systems expected to play a critical role in advancing Africa’s pandemic preparedness agenda.
