Police in Unification City, popularly known as “Smell No Taste,” are investigating a fatal stabbing incident that claimed the life of a 27-year-old man on Saturday morning. The Liberia National Police (LNP) identified the suspect as 39-year-old Jeremiah Souh, who surrendered to local authorities shortly after the incident. The victim, Anthony Alieu, was rushed to the Ma-Juah Memorial Health Center, where he was pronounced dead. His remains have been transferred to Green Pasture Funeral Home for preservation. According to a preliminary LNP report, tensions escalated at the local police depot at about 8:45 a.m. when an angry crowd gathered after Souh sought refuge inside. The crowd reportedly threw stones and other objects at the facility. For security reasons, officers transferred Souh to the LNP Central Headquarters in Monrovia to ensure his safety. Investigators said the fatal encounter stemmed from a dispute over a bucket of urine allegedly placed near the home of neighbor Mamie Lahai. Lahai told police she was informed by another resident that the bucket belonged to Souh. When confronted, Souh denied ownership but allegedly threatened to remove Lahai’s belongings if she disposed of it. Lahai further alleged that Souh later entered her home, removed her possessions, and locked himself inside a nearby house. Witnesses reported that Alieu attempted to intervene in the dispute. According to their accounts, Souh then emerged holding a knife. Alieu reportedly tried to flee but slipped and fell, at which point Souh allegedly stabbed him before fleeing the scene. In his statement to police, Souh claimed that Alieu attacked him first—slapping and stabbing him. Souh said he managed to wrestle the knife away but could not recall where he struck Alieu during the altercation. Police officials have confirmed that no formal charges have yet been filed against Souh. The investigation remains active, with detectives reviewing witness statements, collecting physical evidence, and assessing the suspect’s account of events. Authorities are urging residents of Unification City to remain calm and cooperate fully with the investigation. The LNP has also warned against mob violence, stressing that suspects are entitled to due process under Liberian law. The incident has sparked concern among community members about rising tensions and the need for peaceful conflict resolution. Police have assured the public that updates will be provided as the case progresses.
