Rep. Dahn Condemns Rejection of Health Bill

District #7 Representative Hon. Emmanuel Dahn has voiced sharp disapproval of the House Committee on Health’s recommendation to dismiss proposed amendments to Liberia’s Public Health Law, arguing that the decision undermines the welfare of ordinary citizens. The legislation, titled “An Act to Repeal Sections 26.11 and 50.9 of the Public Health Law of Liberia, Revised 2022,” sought to strengthen patient protections, prohibit discrimination, and guarantee access to emergency care regardless of financial status.

The Committee on Health, chaired by Lofa County District #2 Representative Hon. Julia Fartoma Wiah, submitted a report to plenary advising against the bill’s passage. Speaking to reporters after the plenary’s dismissal of the proposal, Rep. Dahn criticized his colleagues for prioritizing infrastructure projects over life-saving reforms. “We have passed many laws to construct roads, build bridges, and create townships. These are important, but rejecting a bill that could save thousands of lives is unacceptable,” he said. He further disclosed that the committee’s report was prepared without consulting medical professionals, a move he described as irresponsible.

“They didn’t contact any health experts. They simply produced a report telling plenary to reject something that could protect Liberians. This is my disappointment,” he added. The proposed amendment would ensure that no patient is denied emergency treatment due to lack of funds. Families would be required to sign a commitment form to settle medical bills later, while hospitals and clinics provide immediate care. Rep. Dahn emphasized that healthcare and education should never be compromised, lamenting the plight of poor Liberians who often die without receiving medical attention. “No one should die because they don’t have money.

Every time we visit hospitals, we see the reality—there is no healthcare for the poor,” he stressed. Following the committee’s recommendation, House Speaker Richard Nagbe returned the communication for further review. Rep. Dahn vowed to continue pressing for the bill’s passage and eventual submission to the Senate. “Rejecting this bill undermines the interest of the Liberian people. It’s unfair. I will follow up to ensure it is passed,” he declared. He concluded that the fight to enact the legislation is about safeguarding the dignity and lives of Liberians, insisting that lawmakers must place human survival above financial considerations.
