VP Koung calls for Stronger Blue Economy Strategy

The Vice President of the T Republic of Liberia, Hon. Jeremiah Kpan Koung, delivered a compelling statement on behalf of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., the Government, and the People of Liberia at the Africa for the Ocean Summit, held in Nice, France on June 9, 2025. Vice President Koung called for enhanced regional and international cooperation, underscoring that ocean related challenges transcend borders. “We cannot do this alone. The ocean knows no borders,” he emphasized. “Liberia calls for stronger regional cooperation through the African Union’s Blue Economy Strategy and the African Coastal and Marine Strategy.” “It is a pleasing duty to be here at this Africa for the Ocean Summit, which brings together policymakers, scientists, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and youth, inspired by a shared commitment to unlock the full potential of Africa’s ocean for sustainable development and prosperity,” said VP Koung.

With over 580 kilometers of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean, Liberia views the ocean as vital to livelihoods, food security, economic growth, and climate regulation. The Vice President highlighted the central role of artisanal fishing communities and the ecological importance of Liberia’s marine and coastal ecosystems.
