On Monday, August 18, 2025, the Liberia National Police (LNP) engaged a group of protesting commercial drivers who staged a peaceful demonstration in Monrovia, voicing strong grievances over what they termed as persistent harassment from the Liberia Traffic Management (LTM). According to the drivers, the LTM has subjected them to constant ticketing, often for alleged traffic violations they consider unfair. They argued that the frequent issuance of tickets has severely undermined their ability to sustain their businesses, leaving many struggling to provide for their families. The drivers further claimed that the system has created unnecessary financial burdens and a hostile working environment. During the dialogue with police officers, the president of the Drivers’ Union expressed deep frustration over the situation, describing the operations of LTM as “unbearable” and unsustainable for commercial drivers across the country. “Our members are already battling with high fuel costs, vehicle maintenance, and daily survival. The additional pressure from LTM is simply unacceptable. We are appealing to the Government of Liberia to abolish this system that does not work in our favor,” he said. The protesting drivers reiterated their call for government intervention, stressing that the continuous operation of LTM is detrimental not only to their livelihood but also to the broader transportation sector, which plays a vital role in the movement of goods and people across Liberia. Meanwhile, officers of the Liberia National Police urged the aggrieved drivers to remain calm and assured them that their concerns would be given due attention. The LNP encouraged the leadership of the drivers to meet with authorities at Police Headquarters on Tuesday, where discussions are expected to take place in a peaceful and professional manner. Police officials emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue as a means of resolving disputes, while also calling on all parties to exercise patience and avoid disruptions to public order. The LNP further noted that the government remains committed to ensuring fair regulation of road traffic and the protection of both drivers and commuters. The outcome of Tuesday’s meeting at the LNP Headquarters is expected to shape the way forward in addressing the drivers’ grievances and determining the future role of the Liberia Traffic Management system in the country.
