Liberia Accelerates Rural Electrification with CLSG/RE

The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) has announced a steady progress in the implementation of the CLSG/Rural Electrification (RE) Project, funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB). This landmark initiative is being executed under the guidance of the Department of Projects, LEC, with operational delivery led by the Corporation’s Rural Electrification Division. The project centers on the construction of a 3-kilometer transmission line, designed to interconnect three vital substations—Yekepa, Botota, and Buchanan—as part of a broader strategy to extend access to reliable electricity across underserved counties in alignment with the Government’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID). The CLSG/RE Transmission line project is a critical component of Liberia’s energy sector development strategy, aimed at improving the reliability and efficiency of the electricity grid. The project will have a significant impact on the electricity supply of three counties: Rivercess, Grand Bassa, and Bong. In Rivercess, 20 towns are expected to be connected to the electricity grid, benefiting an initial 3,000 customers and featuring the installation of 848 streetlights while 31 towns will be connected in Grand Bassa to provide electricity to an estimated 4,500 customers including the installation of 836 streetlights as well as 30 tows in Bong County to connect an initial 4000 customers featuring 800 streetlights, to improve the quality of life for residents, support economic development, and enhance public safety. Currently 60% complete, the CLSG/RE Project underscores Liberia’s commitment to equitable energy access and regional integration through sustainable infrastructure. LEC recognizes the critical support of the AfDB in enabling this transformative effort and reaffirms its commitment to empowering Liberian communities with dependable power.
