The Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) on Friday, August 15, 2025, convened its first called meeting of the Board of Directors for the year at the Authority’s corporate headquarters in Monrovia. The session, chaired by Board Chairman Hon. S. Tornorlah Varpilah, brought together both statutory and non-statutory members in a deliberative forum to review and adopt several critical governance instruments designed to enhance institutional efficiency and sustainability. Among the key documents approved were the Annual Operational Plan, which outlines LiMA’s strategic activities and targets for the year; a Risk and Fraud Management Framework, aimed at safeguarding the Authority’s operations from emerging threats; and a Management Training Policy, which seeks to build capacity, improve leadership, and strengthen staff performance across the organization. Board Chairman Hon. Varpilah described the meeting as a pivotal step toward repositioning LiMA for greater transparency, accountability, and competitiveness within the global maritime sector. “The decisions we reached today represent a collective commitment to strengthening governance, improving operational standards, and ensuring that the Liberia Maritime Authority remains a trusted international partner,” he noted. The reforms are expected to modernize LiMA’s internal processes, streamline decision-making, and reinforce Liberia’s standing as a leading maritime nation. In addition, the adoption of the new management training policy underscores the Board’s focus on human capital development as a driver of long-term institutional growth. The meeting also served as a platform for members to exchange views on future reforms, with an emphasis on aligning LiMA’s work with international best practices and the Government of Liberia’s broader development agenda. The Liberia Maritime Authority remains committed to its mandate of regulating, promoting, and safeguarding Liberia’s maritime program. With the Board’s approval of these reforms, LiMA is poised to further enhance efficiency, service delivery, and compliance with global maritime standards.
