Police Investigate Alleged Suicide in Nimba County

Authorities in Nimba County are investigating the suspected suicide of a 25-year-old man, Josiah Whean, whose lifeless body was discovered on Thursday, July 31, in Whean Village, Gbeletuo Town, District #6. According to police and local reports, the deceased reportedly left home early Thursday morning for his farm, carrying a single-barrel firearm. When he failed to return, concerned residents launched a search and later found his body lying face-down in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound to his left side. A firearm believed to be his was found nearby, positioned toward the body. Eyewitnesses stated that a gunshot was heard earlier in the day but was initially assumed to be connected to routine hunting activities in the area. A 15-member coroner’s jury, along with local law enforcement, responded to the scene and confirmed the victim was deceased upon arrival. The preliminary observation by the jury suggests suicide, though authorities stress that a full investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the death. The Liberia National Police in Toweh Town have since secured the firearm as evidence and are continuing their investigation. While the family of the deceased has reportedly waived prosecution and taken custody of the body for burial, police say they remain committed to ensuring all facts are established. "We extend our condolences to the family of the late Josiah Whean and urge the public to remain calm as we complete our investigation," a local police official said. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information related to the incident to contact the nearest police station.
