Second Phase of Local Governance Dialogue Engages Stakeholders in Weala, Margibi County

 The second phase of the Local Governance Dialogue was successfully held today in Weala, Margibi County, bringing together 50 key participants from across the county. The event is part of the ongoing “Strengthening Political Accountability and Governance in Liberia” initiative, supported by the Embassy of Ireland in Liberia. Participants in the dialogue included the County Finance Officer, County Development Officer, members of the County Council, District and Township Commissioners, traditional chiefs, civil society representatives, members of the media, and other local leaders. The day-long dialogue provided a platform for comprehensive learning and engagement around the evolving structure of local governance in Liberia. Key topics included the powers and authority of county administrations, the composition and function of county councils, and the processes involved in the preparation, planning, implementation, execution, monitoring, and reporting of County Development Projects (CDPs). Facilitators also highlighted the distinction and linkages between the roles and responsibilities of the central government and local government entities. Through participatory discussions, attendees deepened their understanding of how local governance reform under the Local Government Act is shifting more decision-making power to the local level. Participants expressed strong appreciation for the opportunity to build their capacity and engage in dialogue that promotes accountability, transparency, and inclusive development. “This was an eye-opening experience,” said one township commissioner. “Understanding our legal mandates and the budgeting process gives us the tools we need to better serve our communities.” A traditional chief in attendance remarked, “Now we know how our voices can shape development priorities. This dialogue brings governance closer to the people.” The dialogue also underscored the importance of community engagement, transparency in budget allocation and spending, and the need for continuous collaboration among county officials, civil society, and citizens. The initiative aims to strengthen democratic governance and promote trust between citizens and their local leaders. Organizers reiterated that similar dialogues will continue across Liberia to ensure that all counties are adequately informed about the restructured local governance framework. These efforts are critical to enhancing political accountability and ensuring that development resources are effectively managed and equitably distributed.
