In a landmark engagement, the Governor and Elders of the Borough of New Kru Town on Thursday formally presented a three-year strategic development plan to House Speaker, Richard Nagbe Koon, during a courtesy visit to his Capitol Building office.
The delegation, led by Governor Robert Teah, expressed gratitude to Speaker Koon for his instrumental role in securing New Kru Town’s first-ever inclusion in the National Budget an achievement hailed as a historic breakthrough for the Borough. Speaking on behalf of the Elders, Vice Governor for Administration, Nelson Sekeh, emphasized the need for the Legislature to grant the Borough an official platform to present and preserve its unique historical narrative. “New Kru Town’s legacy deserves national recognition and archival preservation,” Sekeh stated.
Responding, Speaker Koon reaffirmed his commitment to the Borough, noting the budgetary inclusion fulfills a longstanding promise. He underscored the importance of documenting New Kru Town’s history, describing it as the third borough in the world and a key contributor to Liberia’s maritime economy through its foundational role in the establishment of the Freeport of Monrovia. “This marks the first time New Kru Town has been formally recognized in the National Budget,” Speaker Koon said. “Its history must be preserved so that future generations understand the sacrifices and achievements of their forebears.”
He further noted the Borough should have historically benefited from the economic activities of the Freeport through corporate social responsibility and targeted government interventions.
Regarding the strategic plan, Speaker Koon commended its structure and vision but advised the leadership to refine the document for realistic costing and implementation. He assured the delegation of his office’s support in presenting both the development plan and the Borough’s historical account before the full plenary of the House of Representatives.
The meeting concluded with mutual commitments to deepen collaboration and ensure that New Kru Town’s development priorities and cultural heritage receive the national attention they deserve.
