Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC) of Liberia, Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah, is currently leading a high-level delegation of regional electoral experts to the Federal Republic of Nigeria for a five-day Post-Election Follow-up and Needs Assessment Mission (PEF/NAM). The visit, which commenced on Monday, July 28, 2025, in Abuja, is being conducted under the auspices of the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC). Madam Browne Lansanah is heading a team comprised of Chairpersons and Deputy Chairpersons of Electoral Management Bodies (EMBs) from across the ECOWAS region. Also part of the mission are senior representatives from the ECONEC Permanent Secretariat, International IDEA, and the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA). The primary objective of the mission is to assess the implementation of ECONEC’s recommendations issued after Nigeria’s 2023 Presidential Elections. Through a peer-to-peer electoral review process, the delegation seeks to support Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in strengthening democratic processes and electoral integrity. Upon arrival in Abuja, the ECONEC team was formally received and briefed by officials of INEC, led by Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu. Discussions focused on Nigeria’s progress in electoral reform, technology use in elections, voter education, and inclusion of marginalized groups. In the days ahead, the delegation will hold consultations with key electoral stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, media representatives from the Nigeria Union of Journalists, and security agencies involved in electoral operations. “This mission reaffirms our collective commitment as Electoral Management Bodies in West Africa to support one another, learn from each other, and promote transparent, peaceful, and credible elections across our region,” Madam Browne Lansanah said. The mission also aims to identify capacity-building and technical support needs that can be addressed through regional cooperation and international partnerships. The National Elections Commission of Liberia will continue to provide updates as the delegation advances its engagements in Nigeria, contributing to the broader objective of strengthening electoral systems and democratic governance within the ECOWAS subregion.
