The Chairman of the ruling Unity Party (UP), Rev. Luther Tarpeh, has emphatically declared that under his leadership as Chairman, the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) will never return to power in Liberia. Speaking during a live radio interview on Monday, November 3, 2025 in Monrovia, Chairman Tarpeh asserted that the CDC is “very good and more effective in opposition” and should remain in that role, while the Unity Party is “better suited and proven in governance.” According to Chairman Tarpeh, every political organization has its area of strength, and for the CDC, that strength lies in serving as a critical opposition force, not in leading the affairs of the state.
“The CDC functions better as an opposition because that’s where they perform best in making noise, criticizing, and organizing rallies. Governance, however, is not about noise; it’s about leadership, vision, and results. And the Unity Party has consistently demonstrated that we are better in governance,” he said confidently. He further noted that with him at the helm of the Unity Party, the ruling establishment will continue to maintain its political dominance over the CDC in future elections. “With Luther Tarpeh as Chairman, the Unity Party will always defeat the CDC at the ballot box.
The people of Liberia have seen the difference between propaganda and progress, between promises and performance. The UP is about service, not slogans,” Tarpeh emphasized. Chairman Tarpeh used the platform to outline his administration’s plan to strengthen the Unity Party’s institutional base. He revealed that the Party is preparing to construct its national headquarters in Monrovia and additional county offices across all 15 political subdivisions of Liberia. The initiative, he said, will ensure that the UP maintains a strong, organized presence nationwide and continues to mobilize grassroots support. Importantly, Chairman Tarpeh stressed that no government resources will be used in this project. “We will not take one cent of government money for our party’s projects.
The Unity Party believes in transparency and accountability. This is our commitment to good governance and political integrity,” he clarified. He dispelled rumors suggesting that the ruling party’s plan to build a new headquarters was an imitation of the CDC’s recent efforts to rebuild its facilities following its eviction from its previous premises. “We are not copying anyone. Our plans have been on the table long before the CDC’s eviction. The Unity Party is made up of some of Liberia’s best intellectuals and strategists; we don’t need to copy from anyone. We lead, and others follow,” Tarpeh said assertively.
Addressing allegations within political circles that he received money from the government for post-election celebrations in 2024, Chairman Tarpeh categorically denied the claims. He described them as baseless and politically motivated attempts to tarnish his reputation. “I want to make this very clear: I did not take a dime from any government or party celebration funds. Every activity of the Unity Party is conducted transparently and in line with the values of accountability that President Joseph Nyuma Boakai champions,” Tarpeh emphasized. “Those spreading lies are simply frustrated by the Unity Party’s success and the confidence Liberians continue to show in our leadership.” Chairman Tarpeh reiterated that the Unity Party government remains focused on delivering real change to the Liberian people through sound governance, accountability, and inclusive development.
“The CDC talks about growth, but the people know what they experienced hardship, division, and mismanagement. The Unity Party is fixing the broken systems they left behind,” Tarpeh remarked. He called on all Liberians to remain hopeful and united behind President Boakai’s leadership, assuring that the administration’s policies will soon yield visible and lasting results. “Liberia is moving forward. We are not going back to the days of chaos and confusion. The Unity Party is building a future based on stability, growth, and dignity for all Liberians,” he concluded. He noted that as a pastor, educator, and seasoned administrator, integrity has always guided his work both in public and political life.
“The people of Liberia know my record. I don’t play politics with honesty. Every dollar spent by this party is accounted for,” he affirmed. In response to Chairman Tarpeh’s remarks, the National Chairman of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change, Mr. Janga Kowo, dismissed Tarpeh’s assertions as political bravado and claimed that the CDC will reclaim state power in 2029. According to Mr. Kowo, the ruling Unity Party has “failed to meet the expectations of the Liberian people” and is “confused in running the country.” He argued that the current administration has adopted a “trial-and-error” approach to governance, which is eroding public confidence.
“The Unity Party is breaking all the laws and lacks direction. Under the CDC, Liberia experienced massive growth and significant infrastructure development. The UP is simply riding on the foundation that the CDC built,” Kowo stated. He further contended that the current government is “walking in the footsteps of the CDC,” utilizing programs and policies initiated under the previous administration while criticizing the very people who laid the groundwork for progress. “They are enjoying the fruits of the seeds we planted. The CDC did all the heavy lifting from roads and electricity to youth empowerment — and now the UP is taking credit,” he added.
