The newly appointed Officer-in-Charge and Interim Director General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), Dr. Sia Wata Camanor, has vowed to bring transformative reforms, professionalism, and renewed strength to Liberia’s public health sector.‎‎Speaking at her assumption of office ceremony on October 20, 2025, Dr. Camanor expressed heartfelt appreciation to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., for entrusting her with the leadership of NPHIL based on the recommendation of the institute’s Board of Directors. She described the appointment as both an honor and a profound responsibility to serve the country at a crucial time.‎‎

“This is more than just a position—it symbolizes a new chapter for NPHIL and a fresh beginning for the protection and advancement of Liberia’s public health system,” she stated.‎‎Dr. Camanor also thanked Health Minister Dr. Louise M. Kpoto for her confidence and encouragement, describing it as a call to serve with courage, competence, and compassion. She further commended Board Chairman Dr. Stephen Kennedy and members of the Board for their support during what she termed an important transitional period, assuring them of her commitment to transparency, accountability, and institutional growth. 

Addressing NPHIL’s workforce, whom she fondly referred to as the heartbeat of the institution, Dr. Camanor praised their hard work and dedication.‎‎“You are the defenders of Liberia’s public health,” she said. “From laboratory scientists and epidemiologists to field officers and logisticians—your unwavering commitment forms the foundation of our national health security.”‎‎She compared NPHIL to the “fire service” for public health emergencies, describing herself as the “fire chief,” emphasizing the importance of preparedness, teamwork, and rapid response to outbreaks.‎‎Outlining her vision for the future, Dr. Camanor pledged to strengthen NPHIL through capacity building, modernized laboratories, improved surveillance systems, and enhanced local and international collaboration.
