The Government of Liberia has begun disbursing funds to 500 farmers across eight counties under a $4 million agricultural initiative aimed at boosting rice production and reducing reliance on imported food. The farmers, organized under the Public Sector Investment Project (PSIP), are cultivating a variety of crops, including rice, cassava, maize, oranges, avocados, and coconuts.

Each beneficiary is receiving $1,000 per hectare to support the cultivation of 1,000 hectares of lowland rice in targeted regions. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, 60 percent of the funding is allocated as direct cash assistance for land preparation and development, while the remaining 40 percent is tied to farming milestones such as weeding and harvesting. In addition to financial support, beneficiaries are also receiving fertilizers, improved rice seeds, pesticides, and other essential supplies. Officials describe the program as historic, noting it is the first time farmers are receiving direct financial compensation of this nature.

The government has stressed the importance of accountability and pledged strict monitoring to ensure the funds are used properly. Distribution is expected to be completed by the end of the week.
