The Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) has officially begun disbursing funds to 500 farmers across eight counties under the Public Sector Investment Project (PSIP) a flagship initiative aimed at boosting food production and reducing the nation’s reliance on rice imports.

For 2025, the agriculture component of PSIP has been allocated US$4 million, dedicated to supporting the cultivation of rice, cassava, maize, oranges, avocados, and coconuts. According to the MOA, farmers are expected to cultivate 1,000 hectares of lowland rice in Bomi, Bong, Grand Bassa, Grand Cape Mount, Margibi, Lofa, Montserrado, and Nimba Counties.

Each participating farmer will receive US$1,000 per hectare with 60% disbursed in direct cash to cover land clearing, preparation, and nursery development, while 40% will go toward weeding and harvesting. In addition, the farmers will benefit from agricultural inputs such as fertilizers, improved seeds, and pesticides. Deputy Agriculture Minister, Moses Gbayan, described the initiative as historic.

“This is the very first time in Liberia’s history that farmers are receiving direct compensation of this kind. The rice you grow this year will feed you and your families next year,” he said. Meanwhile, Deputy Agriculture Minister Antoinette Dukuly urged farmers to remain disciplined with the funds. “Do not use this money for school fees or motorbikes. Every cent must go into your farms,” she cautioned. Farmers across the beneficiary counties have already begun expressing their appreciation.

Annie Doeyee, a farmer from Montserrado, said: “This is the first time the government has helped us in the swamp. We are grateful., Aaron Davies of Bong County added: “Now I can grow my own food, which is even healthier instead of buying imported rice.” The Ministry of Agriculture stressed that PSIP is more than financial support it represents a long-term investment in food security, agricultural sustainability, and improved livelihoods for farmers across Liberia.
