A petition seeking to compel Police Inspector General, Col. Gregory Coleman, to arrest suspended Deputy Minister, Bryant McGill on rape allegation, has surfaced at the Supreme Court. The Chairperson of the Independent Commission on Human Rights, Cllr. Dempster Brown, has filed Writ of Mandamus against IG Coleman. Mandamus is a writ that compels someone or an institution to do what is right as provided by law. Cllr. Dempster Brown's seven- count application, among other things, claimed that the prolonged investigation by police in the alleged rape matter by the suspended deputy minister is unprecedented and unacceptable.
Cllr. Brown strongly argued that many people are currently behind bars at the Monrovia Central Prison for alleged rape without DNA or CCTV footage and are not given preferential treatment like the accused Bryant McGill. He said such discretional handling of the rape case by the Police under the stewardship of Col. Coleman, is selective justice and wants the accused apprehended and brought under the jurisdiction of the court consistent with law. Deputy Minister Bryant McGill has since been suspended by President Joseph Boakia for allegedly raping a 14 -year old girl in Paynesville.
