The Ministry of Labour has disclosed that a total of 1,305 Liberian students benefitted from its 2025 Vacation Job Scheme, an initiative launched to provide short-term employment opportunities for young people during the school break. Making the disclosure in Monrovia on Thursday, Labour Minister, Cllr. Cooper Kruah ,said the program, which was launched earlier this year, exceeded its original target of 1,000 students and represents a significant expansion compared to the 360 students who benefited in 2024.
Months ago, hundreds of hopeful young people were seen in long queues at the Ministry’s offices after the program was announced, highlighting the strong demand for job opportunities among Liberia’s youth. Despite the overwhelming turnout, the Ministry managed to secure 1,305 placements across various companies and institutions, allowing students to gain valuable work experience while also earning an income.
According to Minister Kruah, the initiative was designed not only to provide temporary employment but also to help students address their schooling needs as they prepare for the upcoming academic year. “We know that job opportunities in Liberia are difficult to come by. So, our emphasis is on how we can create employment,” he said. “For the vacation job program, the minimum monthly pay is US$150, and that amount may increase next year.”
The Minister emphasized that the program is part of the government’s broader efforts to empower young people, reduce the economic burden on families, and expand access to job opportunities across the country. While Montserrado County saw the largest number of beneficiaries, placements were also made available in other parts of Liberia. Minister Kruah further noted that the initiative reflects President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s deep concern about the employment challenges confronting the nation, adding that the government remains committed to creating pathways for young Liberians to work and contribute to national development.
He also urged students who benefited from the program to demonstrate respect, dedication, and hard work in their respective roles, stressing that their performance would strengthen partnerships between the government and institutions supporting the initiative. The 2025 Vacation Job Scheme, according to the Minister, not only helps students financially but also exposes them to practical experiences that could shape their career paths in the future.
