Liberia’s Minister of Education, Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah, has outlined a bold plan to strengthen the country’s education system, with teachers and curriculum reform at the center of national renewal.Speaking at an Early Childhood Education (ECE) workshop in Kakata, Dr. Jallah described Liberia’s 48% literacy rate as a “non-negotiable barrier to progress” and announced two key priorities to drive change.1. Professionalizing the teaching workforce – the “absolute cornerstone” of Liberia’s educational revival.2.

Overhauling and aligning the national curriculum to ensure teaching and learning meet the needs of today’s learners and tomorrow’s workforce. This reform is being advanced through a partnership between the Ministry of Education, the European Union (EU), and the Regional Teacher Initiative for Africa (RTIA), focusing on strengthening pre-service training, expanding rural access, and improving teacher retention.Dr. Jallah reaffirmed that empowering teachers is central to Liberia’s Human Capital Development pillar under the ARREST Agenda, ensuring every child learns from prepared, motivated, and supported educators.
