A man identified as Lawrence K. Williams has been formally indicted by the First Judicial Circuit Criminal Court “A” for Montserrado County following a deadly outbreak of violence during the Unity Party’s victory celebration after the 2023 Run-off Presidential Election. According to the indictment signed by Judge Roosevelt Z. Willie, Williams faces multiple charges including Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Criminal Attempt to Commit Murder.

The charges stem from a tragic incident on November 20, 2023, when Unity Party supporters gathered at their Broad Street headquarters to celebrate the election results. Prosecutors allege that Williams “purposely, knowingly, willfully, and critically inflicted bodily wounds” during the festivities, resulting in the deaths of Peter Gray, Mariama Kromah, and Varney Suleiman, and leaving 29 others seriously injured. Williams was arrested and informed of his constitutional rights before undergoing investigation by the Liberia National Police.

Court documents describe the attack as deliberate and reckless, showing a blatant disregard for human life during a moment of national jubilation. If convicted, Williams could face life imprisonment or other penalties under Liberian law. The case has sparked widespread public concern as Liberia continues to grapple with political violence and the urgent need for accountability in post-election periods. The trial, titled Republic of Liberia by and thru the Ministry of Justice versus Lawrence K. Williams, is scheduled for Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at 10:00 AM before Criminal Court “B”.
