Deputy Minister for Youth Development, Mr. J. Bryant McGill
The Ministry of Youth and Sports has confirmed a disturbing report regarding an allegation of rape involving Deputy Minister for Youth Development, Mr. J. Bryant McGill. According to the investigative report, the alleged incident involves a 14-year-old girl, daughter of the Deputy Chief of Security at the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The report revealed that the victim was allegedly sexually abused by Deputy Minister McGill, with multiple audio recordings obtained by the news outlet supporting the claim. One such recording reportedly captures the victim’s father describing how his daughter was assaulted.
Speaking to reporters, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Cllr. Jeror Cole Bangalu, confirmed the allegation and assured the public that the matter has been formally turned over to the Liberia National Police (LNP) for a thorough investigation. “Yes, we can confirm the report. The case is now with the police. Investigation is ongoing. At the Ministry under my watch, there is zero tolerance for unethical behavior, especially sexual misconduct. We are not taking this lightly. There will be administrative action as soon as possible,” Minister Bangalu stated.
Minister Bangalu emphasized that the Ministry holds the highest standards of accountability and integrity, particularly in matters involving the protection of children and vulnerable persons. He noted that while the police investigation runs its full course, the Ministry will move decisively to ensure that appropriate administrative measures are taken against the accused official in line with the law and established procedures. The Minister further condemned all forms of sexual violence, stressing that government institutions must remain safe spaces for employees and their families. “It is unacceptable for any public servant, particularly one entrusted with the development and well-being of young people, to be associated with such an allegation.
We will cooperate fully with the police and the courts to ensure that justice is served,” he added. The Ministry of Youth and Sports extended its sympathies to the victim and her family and assured them of its support throughout the legal process. The Minister also urged the public to remain calm and allow the ongoing investigation to determine the full facts of the matter. This case has heightened public concerns over the prevalence of sexual and gender-based violence in Liberia, underscoring the urgent need for collective national action to protect children and uphold justice.
