Liberia’s Minister of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism, Jerolinmek M. Piah, has issued a strong response to recent comments by Senator Nathaniel F. McGill calling for the resignation of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai. Minister Piah described the Senator’s statements as irresponsible, politically motivated, and detached from the realities of democratic governance. Addressing the media on Thursday, Minister Piah stated that Senator McGill’s call for the President to step down barely two years into his constitutionally mandated term amounts to “reckless and politically deceptive posturing designed to mislead the public.”
“If Senator McGill truly believes in his own challenge, he should lead by example and resign his Senate seat first,” Minister Piah asserted. “Calling on a democratically elected President to resign two years into his term is reckless and politically deceptive.” Minister Piah emphasized that President Boakai’s leadership remains solid, legitimate, and widely supported across the country. He dismissed the Senator’s remarks as empty political theater, noting that such tactics have no bearing on Liberia’s democratic processes. “This is pure political grandstanding meant to confuse the public, not a serious national argument,” Piah continued.
“President Boakai’s mandate is intact and unshaken. These theatrics cannot derail the government’s work.” The Information Minister further challenged Senator McGill to put his popularity and political strength to the test if he is truly confident in his claims. “If McGill wants to test popularity, let him submit himself to a fresh senatorial election in Margibi,” he said. “Leadership is proven through accountability not noise.” Minister Piah cautioned that careless propositions of this nature risk undermining peace and stability, especially in a country still nurturing its democratic institutions. He stressed that responsible political actors must demonstrate maturity and a commitment to national progress.
“These careless propositions undermine peace and stability and have no place in responsible politics,” the Minister added. “Liberia needs constructive engagement, not reckless commentary aimed at stirring unnecessary tension.” The Ministry reaffirmed that the Boakai administration remains focused on governance, development, and improving the lives of the Liberian people, and will not be distracted by baseless political rhetoric.
