The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) has officially launched the 2025 National Fish Market Day, an initiative designed to support local fishmongers and improve public access to affordable seafood. The launch took place on Thursday, December 11, at the institution’s headquarters on Bushrod Island, marking the beginning of a program NaFAA says will boost both local commerce and food security. During the event, fishmongers were provided a designated space to sell their products at competitive prices, with offerings starting as low as five U.S. dollars.
NaFAA emphasized that the initiative aims to ensure consumers have access to fresh, high-quality fish while creating opportunities for small-scale sellers to improve their income. Acting Director General of NaFAA, Cyrus Saygbe, described the launch as an important step in recognizing the essential role fishmongers play in the national economy. He said the establishment of a dedicated fish market day will help stabilize earnings for fishers, enhance product freshness, and reinforce national food safety standards.
DG Saygbe further highlighted that this year’s edition is the first of its kind in Liberia, showcasing a variety of fish species harvested from the country’s marine and inland waters. He added that NaFAA plans to expand the initiative nationwide in the coming months to ensure more communities benefit from structured fish market opportunities. The fisheries sector is a major source of livelihood for thousands of Liberians, providing employment, income, and essential nutrition. NaFAA believes that the introduction of National Fish Market Day will not only strengthen the sector but also contribute to broader economic growth and improved dietary health across the country.
