The National Transit Authority (NTA) has officially launched public transportation services between Harper and Pleebo in Maryland County, restoring an essential commuter link for residents, businesses, and travelers in the southeast. The new route, unveiled over the weekend, is part of the NTA’s broader initiative to expand affordable and reliable mobility nationwide. The deployment of buses to Pleebo and Harper comes after years of transportation challenges in the region, largely due to poor road conditions and high commercial transport fares.
Speaking during the official start of operations, NTA Managing Director stressed that the move reflects the government’s commitment to enhance connectivity and ensure that Liberians in all regions enjoy equal access to public services. “This is a major milestone for the people of Maryland County. The presence of NTA here means that everyone—from market women and students to civil servants and farmers—can now travel at a reasonable cost,” the NTA official said. Local authorities and residents welcomed the development, expressing hope that it will boost trade and improve access to education, healthcare, and other vital services.
Many merchants rely heavily on movement between Harper and Pleebo, two of the county’s busiest commercial hubs. “We used to spend too much money on motorbikes just to travel a short distance,” noted. “With these buses, our transportation burden will be reduced.” The launch of the route is expected to complement ongoing highway rehabilitation efforts supported by the Government of Liberia and international partners.
It also aligns with the NTA’s strategy to increase its fleet presence in underserved counties, fostering economic growth through improved transport infrastructure. As operations begin, community members say they look forward to long-term service stability and additional routes to further connect the southeast to the rest of the country.
