The President of the Republic of Liberia, His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., on Thursday joined other Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in an extraordinary virtual summit convened to discuss the evolving political and security situation in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau. The high-level session, chaired by the current ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, brought together regional leaders to assess the recent developments in Guinea-Bissau, including the reported unrest and institutional tensions that have affected the stability of the country.
The summit aimed to consolidate regional efforts toward safeguarding peace, constitutional order, and democratic governance within the ECOWAS sub-region. During the meeting, President Boakai reaffirmed Liberia’s unwavering commitment to regional peace and stability. He emphasized the importance of collective action and diplomatic engagement in addressing the political challenges facing Guinea-Bissau, noting that the security of one ECOWAS member state directly impacts the stability of the entire region. The Liberian leader expressed strong support for ECOWAS’ ongoing mediation and early-warning efforts intended to prevent further escalation of the crisis.
He underscored the need for adherence to democratic norms, respect for constitutional provisions, and the protection of civilian lives and institutions. President Boakai also commended the ECOWAS Commission for its proactive approach in monitoring the situation and for convening the extraordinary summit in a timely manner. He called for strengthened collaboration among regional security mechanisms to ensure a coordinated response that promotes dialogue and national reconciliation in Guinea-Bissau.
The extraordinary virtual summit concluded with a renewed commitment from all participating leaders to work collectively toward restoring calm and stability in Guinea-Bissau.
