The Rural and Renewable Energy Agency (RREA) of Liberia has signed a US$5.55 million grant subsidy agreement with Rural Solar Incorporated to expand access to solar home systems for 6,900 rural households across 14 counties. Under the Liberia Electricity Sector Strengthening and Access Program (LESSAP), each household will receive a US$35 subsidy to reduce transportation and installation costs.
The project is co-funded by the Government of Japan (US$3.05 million) and the World Bank’s IDA credit (US$2.5 million) to support Liberia’s push toward clean, affordable, and decentralized energy.
The program targets counties including Grand Cape Mount (2,200 households), Gbarpolu (1,300), River Gee (805), Grand Kru (400), Sinoe (305), Maryland (405), Margibi (255), Grand Gedeh (355), Montserrado (150), Nimba (200), Lofa (155), Grand Bassa (105), Rivercess (100), and Bong (105). Beyond household electrification, LESSAP will also fund mini-grids, solar streetlights, and public facility installations, strengthening Liberia’s rural energy resilience and advancing national electrification goals.
