The Rural Universities and Colleges Faculty Association of Liberia (RUCFAL) has threatened an indefinite industrial strike action in protest against what it describes as the government’s continued neglect and failure to address longstanding concerns over salaries and benefits for faculty members at public universities and colleges. RUCFAL, which represents faculties across nine institutions including Bomi County Community College, Bong County Technical College, Grand Bassa University, Grand Gedeh University College, Grand Kru Community College, Lofa County University, Margibi University, Nimba University, and Sinoe County Community College says it is “deeply disappointed” by the government’s silence on salary and benefit standardization.
According to RUCFAL, since February 12, 2025, it has petitioned President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, Sr., and communicated with the Legislature and other key officials, but no concrete action has been taken. The association’s demands include the harmonization of salaries and benefits with those of the University of Liberia and William V. S. Tubman University, relocation and research allowances, as well as the passage of a pending bill for salary and benefit standardization for all public universities and colleges.
“After months of peaceful engagement and media publications, RUCFAL has no option but to proceed with its planned indefinite industrial strike action,” the association declared. “We have been patient, responsible, and peaceful in our approach. Yet, the silence and inaction of the government leave us with no alternative.” RUCFAL emphasized that the strike will be sustained until its demands are met. During the action, faculty members will not be allowed to enter campuses or engage in any academic activities.
