Serious tension erupted early Saturday morning in the Red Light commercial district, particularly around the Parker Paint area, following a violent confrontation reportedly triggered by a longstanding land dispute. According to eyewitnesses, the situation escalated rapidly when an argument between two parties over ownership of a parcel of land turned violent, leading to the burning of a store and heavy smoke engulfing the surrounding area.
The fire, which sent plumes of dark smoke into the sky, created panic among residents and business owners, forcing many to abandon their shops and flee for safety. Reports from the scene indicate that the altercation attracted large crowds, further intensifying the confusion and fear in the busy commercial zone. Some individuals were seen attempting to break into shops as chaos unfolded, prompting the swift intervention of officers of the Liberia National Police (LNP). The LNP responded by firing tear gas to disperse the crowd and prevent potential looting.
Police presence has since been reinforced in the area as security personnel work to restore calm and prevent further escalation. The Liberia National Fire Service was also alerted to help contain the blaze and protect nearby properties. While no casualties have been officially confirmed at this time, several individuals sustained minor injuries during the commotion. Authorities have begun preliminary investigations to determine the root cause of the dispute and identify those responsible for instigating the violence and arson.
The incident has disrupted normal business activities in one of Monrovia’s busiest commercial hubs, as traders and commuters remain cautious amid the heavy security presence. The Liberia National Police has called on the public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement officers as investigations continue. The Police further warned against acts of mob violence and urged all parties involved in land disputes to seek legal redress through the appropriate channels rather than resorting to violence.
