The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Richard Nagbe Koon, will tomorrow, Friday, October 3, 2025, dedicate and officially turn over a newly constructed incinerator to the management of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Health Center (JFK). The project, valued at a little over forty thousand United States dollars (US$40,000), is in direct fulfillment of a promise made by Speaker Koon during his visit to the country’s premier referral hospital in March of this year. During that tour, hospital authorities raised concerns over the facility’s long-standing challenge with safe and cost-effective waste disposal. They explained the enormous financial burden associated with transporting and managing medical waste and appealed to the Speaker for support.

In response, Speaker Koon committed to providing the institution with a modern incinerator to address its waste disposal needs. An incinerator is a specialized facility designed to burn waste materials at extremely high temperatures, reducing them to ash or gas. For medical facilities, incinerators are essential for ensuring the safe and environmentally responsible disposal of hazardous hospital waste, thereby reducing risks to public health and the environment. Originally scheduled for completion within ninety days, the project experienced brief delays due to technical issues. Despite these challenges, the construction has now been finalized, and the facility is ready for commissioning. The dedication ceremony will take place tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. on the grounds of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Health Center.

The event will bring together lawmakers, government officials, the management and staff of JFK, as well as representatives of the health sector and community stakeholders. Speaker Koon’s intervention underscores his commitment to improving public health facilities and supporting institutions that serve thousands of Liberians daily. The donation of the incinerator marks a significant step toward strengthening healthcare delivery and safeguarding public health through better waste management practices.
