In a bold move to strengthen Liberia’s public infrastructure and educational facilities, Speaker of the House Richard Nagbe Koon has announced the launch of two major renovation projects: the refurbishment of the Butaw Administrative Building in Sinoe County and the modernization of restrooms at the University of Liberia’s Capitol Hill and Fendall campuses. These initiatives, valued at a combined USD 42,000 (approximately LRD 6.6 million), reflect Speaker Koon’s commitment to improving the quality of life for Liberians through targeted investments in essential public spaces. The Butaw Administrative Building, a cornerstone of local governance in Sinoe County, is set to undergo a comprehensive renovation. The project, budgeted at USD 10,000 (LRD 200,000), will address long-standing structural issues and introduce upgrades aimed at enhancing the building’s functionality and accessibility. Local officials have welcomed the initiative, noting that the building has suffered from years of neglect and limited resources. Once completed, the renovated facility is expected to streamline administrative operations and improve service delivery for residents of Butaw District. In a parallel effort to uplift the nation’s academic environment, Speaker Koon is funding the renovation of restrooms across both University of Liberia campuses. With a budget of USD 32,000 (LRD 6,400,000), the project will install modern fixtures, improve sanitation systems, and ensure reliable water access—critical upgrades that students and faculty have long called for. The initiative comes at a time when the university is striving to enhance its infrastructure and student experience. University officials expressed optimism that the renovations will contribute to a cleaner, safer, and more dignified learning environment. Speaking at the announcement, Speaker Koon emphasized the broader significance of these projects: “These projects are part of my broader vision to ensure that public facilities and learning environments meet the dignity and needs of our people. When infrastructure works, communities thrive.” He added that the renovations are just the beginning of a series of development efforts aimed at bridging gaps between urban and rural communities and fostering inclusive growth. Construction is expected to begin imminently, with completion timelines to be announced in the coming weeks. The Office of the Speaker has pledged transparency and community engagement throughout the process to ensure that the projects meet the expectations of those they are intended to serve.
