William V. S. Tubman University (TU) on Friday hosted its 5th Freshman Induction Ceremony, welcoming over 700 new students, the largest freshman class in the institution’s history. The ceremony, held under the inspiring theme “The Rising,” marked a historic milestone in the university’s commitment to expanding access to quality higher education in southeastern Liberia. Freshman induction at Tubman University is a cherished academic tradition that officially welcomes new students into the TU family. It symbolizes the beginning of their academic journey and their pledge to uphold the institution’s core values of discipline, integrity, innovation, and excellence.
Delivering his special address, Dr. Olu Q. Menjay, President and Chief Executive Officer of Tubman University, commended the freshmen for choosing TU as the foundation for their academic and professional development. “This is the first and largest freshman class in the history of Tubman University,” Dr. Menjay declared. “We thank you for trusting TU to prepare you for a productive and meaningful future.” Dr. Menjay urged the new students to become positive change agents in their communities and to remain vigilant against individuals or influences that might seek to misuse their youthful energy. “Do not let anyone use your hands to destroy Liberia,” he cautioned.
“Think for yourself, be disciplined, and strive to stand out among your peers.” Quoting the renowned Liberian scholar Edward Wilmot Blyden, Dr. Menjay reminded students that without proper training and moral guidance, youthful energy can be misdirected to cause harm rather than contribute to national progress. As part of the ceremony, the inductees recited the Freshman Oath, pledging to respect and uphold all university rules and regulations. “As students of Tubman University, we agree to obey and abide by all rules governing the institution,” they affirmed collectively.
Dr. Menjay also highlighted TU’s growing international footprint, noting that several Tubman University graduates are now pursuing advanced studies abroad including four in the United States, two in India, one in South Africa, and two in China. “Our goal is to ensure that Tubman University students can compete globally through hard work, discipline, and academic excellence,” he stated. The ceremony concluded on a hopeful note, with both faculty and students embracing the spirit of “The Rising.” The event underscored Tubman University’s ongoing mission to nurture a new generation of ethical, innovative, and globally competitive leaders committed to building a brighter future for Liberia.
