The Board of Trustees of the University of Liberia (UL) has called on the University of Liberia Faculty Association (ULFA) to immediately rescind its decision to disengage from all academic activities, assuring that steps are being taken to address their long-standin g grievances.
In a statement issued Monday, the UL Board said it recognizes the legitimacy of ULFA’s concerns, which include poor sanitary conditions, unresolved faculty promotions, salary disparities, social security matters, issues relating to faculty on study leave, and the need for extensive renovation across all campuses. More recent complaints include outstanding payments for overload and vacation school salaries.
“The Board understands the concerns raised by the UL Faculty Association and is committed to working collaboratively with it and the university administration to address these issues,” the statement read. The Board announced that an emergency meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, September 3, 2025, to specifically deliberate on the faculty’s grievances and explore workable solutions. While acknowledging ULFA’s frustrations, the Board appealed to all faculty and staff to prioritize the continuity of teaching, learning, and research at the nation’s premier institution of higher learning. “While the Board seeks a peaceful resolution of these critical issues, it admonishes all faculty members to avoid any actions that would disrupt academic activities at the University during this time,” the statement added.
ULFA, on Friday, August 29, 2025, declared that its members would not participate in any academic activities until their welfare concerns were given serious and practical attention. The action has since left students uncertain about the resumption of classes, heightening concerns about delays in the academic calendar. The Board of Trustees, however, assured stakeholders that it is “actively working to address critical matters affecting the smooth operation of the University,” stressing that the institution’s mission must not be compromised. The statement was signed by Numene T. H. Bartekwa, Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
