The Liberia Council of Churches (LCC), through its Chairman on Evangelism, Rev. Amminadab K. John, has strongly condemned the recent same-sex marriage ceremony allegedly held at the S.T. Nagbe United Methodist Church in Monrovia. According to the LCC, the act stands in direct contradiction to the Holy Scriptures, the Constitution of Liberia, and the deeply rooted moral values of the Liberian people. “The Holy Bible is explicit in its teachings regarding sexual relations and marriage,” Rev. John emphasized. “From creation, God’s design for marriage has been a sacred union between one man and one woman.” He referenced several biblical passages, including:
Rev. John described the alleged ceremony as “an unbiblical and unlawful act that undermines the moral and spiritual foundation upon which Liberia stands” and urged the Christian community to remain steadfast in upholding biblical truth without compromise. While affirming the Gospel’s call for love and compassion, the LCC stressed that sin must be confronted and not celebrated. The Council has called on:
Quoting Psalm 33:12 – “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD” – the LCC urged Liberians to guard the spiritual and moral integrity of the nation. The Council further disclosed that it has engaged Bishop Samuel J. Quire of the United Methodist Church (UMC) in Liberia, who provided a formal response affirming the UMC’s alignment with the biblical definition of marriage as between one man and one woman. This position, the LCC noted, reflects the shared convictions of the broader Christian community in the country. The LCC encouraged the UMC Liberia Annual Conference to display its Book of Discipline or Articles of Faith to dispel public misconceptions and safeguard the moral standing of the Church in Liberia. “The Church in Liberia will never support any act that does not align with the Holy Scriptures,” Rev. John reiterated. With a mission centered on witness, advocacy, and service that promotes unity, social justice, good governance, and national reconciliation, the Liberia Council of Churches affirmed its unwavering commitment to defending biblical truth and national moral values.
The Liberia Council of Churches (LCC) is a fellowship of Christian denominations and organizations committed to unity, evangelism, social justice, and the moral and spiritual development of Liberia.
