
A six-member delegation from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has arrived in Monrovia to engage with the Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA) ahead of the official opening of the March Term of the Supreme Court of Liberia scheduled for Monday, March 9. The visiting delegation was received and brought into the country through the efforts of the African Bar Association Deputy Secretary General,Cllr Edwina Edjerah Barchue, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen professional ties and legal cooperation between the two West African bar associations.
Leading the Nigerian delegation is the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe, a Senior Advocate of Nigetia (SAN). He is accompanied by prominent members of the association including Babatunde Ogala,, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Sammie Somiari, SAN, Abdul Mohammed, SAN, Barbara Omosun Esq and Etaba Agbor, Esq.
According to Cllr Juah Lawson president of the Liberian National Bar Association, the visit forms part of a broader collaboration between the two legal bodies aimed at strengthening professional exchanges, enhancing legal practice, and promoting regional cooperation among lawyers within the West African sub-region.Cllr Lawson added that The delegation is expected to participate in several activities organized by the LNBA, including attending the formal opening ceremony of the March Term of the Supreme Court of Liberia. The event traditionally brings together judges, lawyers, government officials, and members of the diplomatic community to mark the commencement of a new judicial term.
The Deputy Secretary General of the ABA say the visit also provides an opportunity for discussions on issues affecting the legal profession in both countries, including judicial reforms, rule of law, professional ethics, and cross-border legal cooperation.
Speaking briefly upon the arrival of the delegation, the Deputy Secretary General of the ABA described the visit as a significant moment for strengthening professional solidarity between lawyers in Liberia and Nigeria. They noted that the presence of the NBA leadership at the opening of the Supreme Court term demonstrates the longstanding relationship between the two bar associations.
The Nigerian delegation is also expected to hold engagements with members of the Liberian bar and other legal stakeholders during their stay in the country, focusing on the exchange of experiences and best practices in the administration of justice.
The Liberian National Bar Association has in recent years intensified efforts to deepen regional partnerships with sister bar associations across Africa as part of its commitment to advancing the rule of law and improving legal practice within the region.
