15 Liberians Set to Undergo International Training in Sustainable Tourism Development

The Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) is proud to announce that 15 Liberians have been selected to participate in an intensive international training program on Sustainable Tourism Development, aimed at strengthening human capacity in Liberia’s growing tourism sector. On Thursday, July 10, 2025, Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah formally hosted the selected candidates at MICAT’s headquarters to commend and encourage them ahead of their training. The program is being facilitated through the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) with generous funding from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The training is part of a broader initiative to support skills development and knowledge transfer in key tourism-related areas, such as destination planning, eco-tourism, cultural heritage management, and sustainable practices. It aligns with the Government of Liberia’s vision to revitalize the tourism industry as a viable driver of economic growth and job creation. Speaking at the gathering, Minister Piah congratulated the participants and expressed pride in Liberia’s growing visibility on the global tourism development stage. “You are ambassadors of Liberia’s future in tourism,” Minister Piah told the participants. “The Government is fully committed to building a vibrant tourism sector, and that begins with investing in our people. Go, represent Liberia well, and return ready to lead with fresh ideas and energy.” One of the beneficiaries, Miss Yassah Joma, expressed heartfelt appreciation on behalf of the group. “We thank Minister Piah and MICAT for assembling such a diverse and dynamic team of young people to benefit from this incredible opportunity,” she said. “We are fully committed to making the best use of this training, and we hope to see even more capacity-building initiatives in the tourism sector for fellow Liberians.” The group comprises professionals and aspiring tourism leaders from various parts of the country, representing a wide range of backgrounds in culture, hospitality, conservation, and creative arts. The training is expected to equip them with internationally recognized best practices and tools that can be adapted to the Liberian context. This initiative underscores MICAT’s proactive efforts to build human capital and enhance Liberia’s competitive edge in global tourism markets. Upon their return, the trainees will be integrated into ongoing projects and future initiatives within MICAT and other relevant tourism bodies.
